Many thanks to Dr David Cunningham from the award winning Spring Grove Clinic in Glasgow who came down to Penistone yesterday. David is an expert on ‘Straight Smile Fast’ rapid orthodontics. The term orthodontics used to spread dread into patients with the thought of unsightly metal braces and rubber bands pinging around the mouth, not anymore! We have been offering Invisalign for nearly a year now and have been amazed by the response. Straight Smile Fast has been introduced to compliment and increase the number of orthodontic cases we can treat here at Penistone Dental Care. Using clear brackets and white wires we can align teeth to create your perfect smile in just six months and often less.

We started our first case yesterday pictures of which I will publish as the case progresses.

As we are approaching the end of the year I wanted to pass on my thanks to everyone for a great year at Penistone Dental Care.

We have continued to grow as a practice and have also expanded the services we offer. Invisalign- invisible braces- have been a tremendous success, not least to straighten my teeth. Thanks to Marcos White, our invisalign doctor who has brought his expertise and fantastic patient management skills to us and delighted everyone he has treated.

The number of patients, old and new, who have had dental implants placed to restore their smiles grows and grows, thank you all for your support and I know how delighted everyone is with the results.

Our tooth whitening offers have proved very popular and are still running so there is plenty of time to get a white smile for your christmas parties.

We have transformed many people’s faces and lives with smile makeovers, why not come in and read some of the testimonials we have received?

Thanks to Laura, Elizabeth and Mary for all their support and tireless devotion to the practice and it’s patients.

And thanks finally to our clients. The number of referrals we receive via word of mouth continues to overwhelm me. Thank you for your support and belief in what we do.

2011 will see a new look website and a promise to carry on improving every aspect of what we do from customer care through to the quality of the dentistry we deliver. If you have any suggestions as to how we could improve what we do please let me know.

Every little helps

It is now 3 weeks until Tesco opens its door in Penistone. There has been endless debate amongst the people of Penistone as to whether this is a good or a bad thing and I can see both sides of the argument. There are shops within Penistone that will no doubt suffer as a result- we already have 2 smaller supermarkets, 2 butchers, 2 newsagents and 2 florists that seem obvious targets.

These shops need to positively differentiate themselves, our florists, Nina at Hackettts has done this by offering bespoke jewellry, cards and gifs and the more unusual flower arrangements that Tesco will not so.

If Tesco were to open an in store dental practice we hope our attention to customer service, and the individual treatment of individuals would do the same.

As the store will open I have to see it as an opportunity for Penistone to reinvent itself. With the obvious closures will we see more brands? Costa, Starbucks maybe even a Pizza Express?? Or more fast food places to service the pub trade?

Exciting times and I know which way I hope it will go!!

I always read a blog by one of the world’s leading experts on marketing, Seth Godin. This week he posted the following list of questions. The post was entitled ’8 questions and a why’. I have answered several as honestly as possible to give all our readers an idea of what we are trying to achieve at Penistone Dental Care

Who are you trying to please? We try to please our customers and also our staff. Why? Happy staff will improve the environment within the practice and make our customers experience more enjoyable; happy customers will tell their friends and family about us which will hopefully bring us new business.

What are you promising? We promise to listen to our customers and design smiles that are as individual as they all are. Why? because what you want is what we want and a conversation is the best way to convert your dreams into reality!

What are you trying to change? We are trying to change people’s perception of dentistry and what can be done. We are trying to wow our clients with excellent, concierge level customer service, we are trying to create beautiful smiles that last for life. Why? Because that’s what makes us happy!

5. Dental implants have special surface textures to allow them to heal.

You can teach an old dog new tricks

I don’t know if I’ve ever said before but I am delighted to tell all my readers that I will be joined in the practice from August of next year by a new dentist. Chris O’Connor has impressed me since we first met with his attitude to dentistry and his strive towards clinical excellence, as well as being a really friendly nice guy.

Chris has already spent several days in the practice shadowing me and has impressed several of our patients (and me) already with his attitude and approachability. After each visit Chris has written to me, at length, letting me all the positive things he found with how we do things.

He has also suggested areas where his training and techniques differ to mine. I was delighted to attend a one-day course with Chris (his suggestion) on endodontics (root canal treatment) and have since changed my techniques slightly as I think this will enable me to get better results for my patients

I am really looking forward to working with Chris and am sure he will be a great success and a worthy addition to the team at PDC!

the joy of learning

As dentists we are committed to our continued professional development. What this means in black and white is we have to do 15 hours of verifiable learning per annum. What this means to me is so much more.

I love learning about clinical and non-clinical (or business) theories that will advance my practice. I have always strived to be the very best that I can be and want my practice to represent this also. I spent 2 days this week in the company of Paddi Lund, an Australian dentist who leads the way in customer service. I thoroughly enjoyed the time and look forward to putting many of the ideas into practice to improve the ‘Penistone Dental’ experience even more.

Two things that stood out for me and are totally unrelated (although I can see a link).

1. On arrival I started chatting to an older dentist and asked why he was attending ’9 hours CPD, it’s like doing 2 days worth in 1 day!’ was the reply.

2. A quote from Paddi ‘our fees are above average but we are not an average dental practice and you wouldn’t want average dentistry would you?’

Where would you want to go?

BBC Online publishes a report on complications associated with oral piercings in light of an Archive of Neurology report of a 22-year-old who died of multiple brain abscesses after getting his tongue pierced. BDA Health and Science Adviser Damien Walmsley emphasises the risk of infection, chipped teeth and gum recession, posed by oral piercings, advising readers that “oral piercing is ill advised and should be avoided.”
